Garden construction at the Cambridgeport School began in 2009 with the removal of asphalt in a 70-foot long narrow stretch behind the school, an area shaded by three locust trees. Planter boxes and benches with built in planters were designed and installed by parent Alex van Praagh. A shady habitat garden was installed in 2010 by Cambridgeport garden committee and CitySprouts staff. In 2011, felted woolly pockets for growing vegetables were installed on the playground fence. During summer 2013, space was given in the back of the school for three raised beds. The garden has a shed and composter. Cambridgeport classes also garden in nearby Squirrel Brand Community garden one block away, where CitySprouts has a number of garden plots.
CitySprouts is a school garden program founded on the principle that all children should experience hands-on learning with real-world applications, support and practice in making good food choices, and a life-long connection to the natural world. CitySprouts’ garden educator is at the Cambridgeport school twice each week during the fall and spring to support teachers' lessons and projects in the school garden. CitySprouts has volunteer opportunities in the garden throughout the year, if you would like to get involved please email [email protected].
