In
Junior Kindergarten, children learn about the five senses, which
presents a wonderful opportunity to explore in the garden. Alice
Guggleman, our CitySprouts coordinator, came into Lorna’s classroom to
share about corn. First she invited students to use their sense of sight
to describe what the corn stalk looked like. Then she gave students a
chance to feel the corn. While this was going on, Lorna started popping
some popcorn in the room, and students used their sense of smell.
Finally, Alice passed around a piece of the corn stalk and instructed
students to chew on it (but not swallow). This releases a sugary-sweet
juice, an opportunity to explore taste as well. They explored some new
vocabulary like “juicy” and “sweet” as they talked about the corn stalk.
