This
winter the Cambridgeport 4th graders went swimming at the Cambridge
Rindge & Latin High School. This is an eight-week program designed
to teach students to become more comfortable in the water and to learn
how to swim. Students learned how to front float, back float, the
elementary backstroke, and the free style stroke.
Students also
received a 10-minute water safety lesson at the beginning of each class
from the CRLS Head High School Swim Coach. Concepts that where covered
included checking for shallow water when diving, the correct way to
assist a swimmer in distress, how to correctly put on a life vest, and
the safest way to jump into the water to when leaving a distressed water
craft.
The swimming program is one of the most enjoyable and
exciting programs the Physical Education department offers. It is also a
great opportunity to learn a life saving skill.
