Cambridgeport’s Kindergarten students have been engaged in a project
about food and nutrition. They have learned about food groups and where
food comes from. They have also been exploring what makes a meal
healthy. They learned from farmers, both through a visit to the Central
square Farmer’s Market, and from a visiting expert/farmer. Many
interesting classroom discussions were had along the way such as “what
makes a protein a protein?”
As a final product for this
expedition, all of the students designed their own placemat that
demonstrated a healthy plate (complete with non-fiction text features
like labels and titles). Parents were invited to share a healthy
breakfast (using the placemats of course), and the placemats will be
used during Kindergarten lunch in the cafeteria once they are all
finished.
