History and Philosophy
History

Cambridgeport School began in 1990–91 with a single kindergarten class in the Cambridgeport neighborhood of Cambridge. In 2001 we moved into the former Fletcher School building at 89 Elm Street. Today we remain an intimate school community with fewer than 300 students in Preschool - 5th grade. From the beginning, the school was carefully founded upon the idea that teachers, staff and families work together as a community toward ensuring success for every child. We believe our practice, policies and perspectives as members of a chosen community should impact all children equally. The values, cultures and beliefs each child brings to our community are sincerely valued.
Philosophy
Our educators believe that children must engage with their world in order to make sense of it. Our teachers create learning environments that help develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills to succeed in life. They make their classrooms spaces for learning where children feel cared for, liked and respected.
We believe in nurturing social-emotional learning, as individuals and as members of a learning community. We set high standards for academic achievement, calling on each student to take responsibility for their own learning, while collaborating, supporting, and respecting others.
