The 3rd and 4th graders have been studying the solar system in
science. Students worked in groups of 2 or 3 to research the sun and the
8 planets that make up our solar system. Groups used many book
resources to gather our information, drew planets to scale to hang on
our wall, created informative posters to go along with each planet and
presented their new knowledge to classmates in order to teach the rest
of the class what they learned.
After
doing this, we realized that a song we had been singing all year fit
perfectly into our solar system unit! As part of our morning meetings,
we’ve learned the Tom Chapin song, “This Pretty Planet.” We’ve practiced
this song as a group, sung it in a two- and then three-part round and
have gotten to the point where students often hum the tune or sing the
song spontaneously.
We decided to integrate our love of music
and singing into the study of our solar system. Each group wrote their
own version of “This Pretty Planet” as an informative ode to the sun or
planet they studied. Because the song is quite short (6 lines long in
total), groups had to decide the most important information they wanted
to communicate about the sun or their planet. Groups had to do this
while also making sure their words fit with the rhythm of the original
song, which was not an easy task. After many revisions and lots of
practice, we celebrated with a live performance for parents.
We
wanted to be able to share our work with the larger school community, so
we recorded our songs. We want to especially thank Aaron Trail, our
school’s resident guitar player and Kindergarten assistant, who recorded
the guitar part that we sang along with. We hope you enjoy and learn as
you listen to our songs!
Original “The Pretty Planet” Lyrics:
This pretty planet spinning through space
Your garden, your harbor, your holy place
Golden sun going down
Gentle blue giant, spin us around
All through the night
Safe ‘till the morning light
Our Sun and Planet Song Lyrics:
This pretty sun, floating in space
Your gasses, your light, your burning face
Yellow sun shining down
Cooler sunspots all around
All through the night
Giving the moon its light
This pretty Mercury spinning through space
Your craters, no air, no atmosphere
Hotness, too close to the sun
88 days in your year
All through the years
Named after Greek God Hermes
This pretty Venus spinning through space
Your carbon dioxide, your yellow face
You are closest to Earth
Named after Venus, Goddess of love
You have volcanoes
Unsafe to walk around
This pretty Earth spinning through space
Your light, your ground, the air we breath
Golden sun going down
Plenty of force that pulls you down
All through the night
Safe ‘cause we’re in the light |
This pretty Mars spinning through space
Your ice cap is freezing on your red face
Mars is the God of War
Rocky red down to your core
All through the night
Asteroids zoom close with a lot of might
This pretty Jupiter spinning through space
Your eye, your storm, your rainbow face
Rainbow colors around
Gentle gas giant, spin all around
All through the rainbows
Safe ‘till the morning light
This pretty Saturn spinning through space
Your 3 rings, your 20 moons, your holy place
Golden Saturn
Gentle bronze giant spin all around
All throught the night
Spinning through the sun’s light
This pretty Uranus spinning through space
Your rings circle around your face
As blue as the skies up above
It spins on your side, so it is my love
All through the night
Away from the sun’s light
This pretty Neptune spinning through space
Your dark spot swirls on your face
No solid ground we can see
12 more pounds than you’d usually be
All through the night
Looking at 8 moons’ light |
