Enthusiastic
fourth and fifth grade students from five schools: Baldwin,
Cambridgeport, Graham & Parks, Kennedy-Longfellow, and Morse –
filled the auditorium of the Cambridge Public Library on March 28th to
hear author/illustrator George O’Connor. O’Connor is the creator of the
popular “Olympians” series, which present action-packed stories of Greek
gods and goddesses in detailed, beautifully rendered comic books. His
entertaining and high-energy presentation began with a description of
himself as a geeky kid who loved to draw monsters and was obsessed with
myths from around the world. He was thrilled to realize years later that
he could actually turn his obsession with mythology into a career.
O’Connor
explained his creative process, which includes meticulous research, as
well as multiple drafts of both words and pictures. Students had many
questions and eagerly took in everything he said. As one student from
Kennedy-Longfellow put it: “He made me want to read, draw, and write
more.”
An added bonus for some students was the opportunity to visit the
Children’s Room or Teen Lounge before and after the presentation.
