Reading
During Reading Workshop, the class gathers together for a mini-lesson in order to learn a specific reading strategy or skill. Students are guided to practice together, and then independent reading follows. It is during this time that the students apply what has been taught in class. Students will be reading independently for about 35 minutes every day in school. A teacher will be either conferring with individual students or attending to a small group of readers. Students may also be reflecting about what they learned in their reader's notebooks and writing reading letters or short essays about their reading.

Writing
During Writing Workshop, the class gathers together for a mini-lesson in order to learn a specific writing strategy. The teacher models the strategy, has the students process the strategy together, and then the students practice the strategy in their writer's notebook or in a writing project they are working on. Students will be independently writing for about 35 minutes every day in school. A teacher will be either conferring with individual students or attending to a small group of writers.

Word Study
Third graders will be learning the roots, prefixes, and suffixes of words. They will learn to use this knowledge to improve their spelling, break apart words to determine meaning, and enhance their writing.
